NEW Support Launching in Merthyr Tydfil

We caught up with Rosemary, Support Group Leader at brand new support group in Merthyr Tydfil. Rosemary shares her reasons for setting up the group, her journey to becoming an Endometriosis UK volunteer and words of encouragement to those thinking about attending a support group.

What inspired you to set up a new support group in Merthyr Tydfil?
I needed support myself during the first covid lockdown and when I searched, I found that my nearest for endometriosis support group was in Brecon, which is 14 miles from me but was available online and  my first thought  was of surely i cant be the only woman in Merthyr with endo that wants and needs help we need help and support closer and easily accessible to Merthyr Tydfil .

Can you tell us about why you wanted to become an Endometriosis UK volunteer?
I had spoken to a support group leader and she was so helpful and understood why I was so passionate about things surrounding diagnosis, my story etc, and in our conversation she mentioned that perhaps I could change the situation of there not being any support in my local area. I first thought “no I can’t do that”, but then I thought “why not? If not me, then who? And when? And how long would people like me be without help and support?” So I suppose the inspiration came when I realised that me and my story could help. Actually, I could do it. That realisation was what made me contact Endometriosis UK.

What impact has endometriosis had on your life?
The honest truth is it I often feel it has ruined my life. It has caused so much illness in my life, taken time with my children, impacted jobs, relationships and friendships and changed the person I was mentally and physically. But I also have to say that all of that has empowered me to be who I am today. It has awakened a strength in me to not let this be the story of others, as the saying goes not on my watch!

What advice would you give to someone who may be attending an Endometriosis UK support group for the first time?
I would say don’t be afraid or think you need to ‘do’ or ‘be’ anything come along. Just come and sit and be with others who really do know how you feel and what you’re going through. Even though everyone’s experience is different, we are all in this together and we will support you . You don’t have to speak or give anything but your time. It’s time for yourself, to feel seen and when and if you’re ready, to be heard.  We’ve got you.

The first group meeting for the Merthyr group will take place online on Wednesday 18th September. Find out more here.
