Helen's Story

I am fortunate that I can be open with colleagues about my endometriosis. We have regular discussions around female health to empower and support each other. They understand I might need to come to the office later because I’ve been doing physio or leave early to go to an appointment. There are no questions asked because my employer provides the flexibility I need to deliver my job. My colleagues know that I can still get the job done.

In a previous role, the story was completely different. I had to quit my job due to a complete lack of support and understanding around my condition. This is no way to treat a woman in the workplace in the 21st century. In the past, employers have given more understanding to a broken toe than a long-term health condition. Just because you cannot see endometriosis, doesn’t mean someone is not suffering.

Adjustments made by employers can have a positive impact in retaining staff and boosting morale. There is much-needed support for women with endometriosis in the workplace. We need to feel comfortable in talking openly about the condition we are living with.
