Some myths still exist about treatment

Pregnancy is not a ‘cure’ for endometriosis. The hormones released when pregnant temporarily suppress the menstrual cycle which can alleviate symptoms. Many women find that their symptoms return after giving birth and their menstrual cycle has returned.

Hysterectomy is not a ‘cure’ for endometriosis. It is usually a last resort, once other options have been exhausted. It can improve the quality of life for many women with severe symptoms. However patients can get a recurrence of symptoms following hysterectomy – particularly if the ovaries were not removed at the same time, or if there has been some endometriosis left behind.
