Jane Smeeth – the endometriosis Plinther!
On 1st October 2009 Jane Smeeth took to the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square to raise awareness of endometriosis and share her experience of the condition with the world.
She was one of 2,400 randomly selected people invited onto the Plinth as part of sculptor Anthony Gormley’s ‘One and Other’ live artwork. So for 100 days, 24 hours a day, these people have each spent 60 minutes on the plinth doing whatever their heart desires.
Having suffered from endometriosis for many years Jane wanted to use her hour on the Plinth to tell people all about endometriosis and what it meant to her. She was wonderful and inspiring, rising above the physical pain she was experiencing at the time.
Watch Jane on the plinth here.

I didn't realise how many other women would support me and share in my hour by giving me their words and feelings to take up there with me. It has touched me deeply to know that I've connected with these other women. Lots of people have told me that they understand my pain so much more clearly after I graphically demonstrated it with my cheese grater, bulldog clip, wooden stake, and rocks from Sheringham beach. I've always seen and felt my pain in these kinds of terms so it made sense to me to show it like that to the world. I hope I've helped other women to have the right words to take to their doctors and get the proper diagnosis and treatment earlier than they would have otherwise.
