Arctic Husky challenge

Ellen and Mike Moore spent days driving a team of huskies, and their nights camping in sub-zero temperatures to raise funds for Endometriosis UK and Dorothy House Hospice care.

Ellen and Mike covered 250km of Arctic terrain, from the city of Tromso, Norway, to the world famous ice hotel in Jukkasjarvi, Lapland, when they took part in the Lapland husky trek earlier this year.

Ellen wanted to take on the challenge following years of pain and suffering from endometriosis and three major operations. Her main aim was to raise the profile of the condition.

Ellen also raised £1,300 for Endometriosis UK. She said: “My endometriosis was diagnosed as cancer prior to a colondectomy in 2007. Mike decided, as he has so wonderfully throughout my illness, that he would also support me on the husky challenge, so what better charity for him to support than Dorothy House?”

Mike said: “I also wanted to raise money for the hospice because we have lost many family members and friends to cancer, and know how important Dorothy House is to people suffering from the disease, and their families.” He raised nearly £2,238 through sponsorship from work colleagues, friends and relatives.

They were the only married couple taking part in the demanding challenge, and had little idea of what to expect when they signed up to make the trek. Mike said: “The challenge was exceptionally hard, a real battle with physical and mental challenge and extreme cold conditions. Camping in temperatures of -25 deg C really made us appreciate simple home comforts like running water and our good health.

“It was quite daunting to know that it was just you, the dogs and the sledge. But the instructors were very good, and the dogs knew exactly what they were doing.

“It was a fantastic challenge, working with amazing animals and their humans in a spectacularly beautiful country, while raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.”
