7th April 09

pink speech marksHello all,

I have settled down to write the next installment of my Ironman training blog. Although training has been going really well over the past week or so I’ve decided to take the evening off. Tonight I had planned a bike ride followed by a short run. But all day I have felt a bit flat. Yesterday I had a really good swim and bike session. As I was feeling good I think I ended up pushing myself a bit too hard which I think has resulted in me feeling flat today. Tomorrow I will have an easy swim in the morning before work and a tough run at lunch time. Therefore, I am going to take it easy this evening and hit hard again tomorrow.

Charlotte, since her operation three weeks ago is steadily getting better. Good news! She has had the most abrasive surgery she has ever had (she has had five lots of laparoscopic surgery) and has had to learn to be very patient with the healing this time. Charlotte and I own a project management company together and yesterday and today she has come to work, which shows great progress.

Last week she had her ureteral stents removed. For those of you who don’t know what a stent is (that was me not so long ago) they are long plastic tubes that run from the kidneys, through the bladder along the complete length of the ureters. The reason for the insertion of stents is that when women very commonly have endometrial matter removed from their bowel and bladder area, the swelling brought on by the surgery can cause the ureters to close up. This would mean that the waste products from the kidneys would not be able to flow away and would result in the woman becoming very ill. So, as I said the stents were removed and neither of us could believe the length of these things! There’s this thin plastic tube that is the length of a boot lace. But it is making my wife well, so that’s all that matters.

Anyway, Charlotte is slowly on the mend although she has recently learnt the stent removal can leave you feeling a little wiped out again. So whilst feeling wiped out she checked on-line to see if it was normal to feel this and it turns out that it can be. So, if your laparoscopic surgery requires stents expect you may feel a bit rubbish for a couple of days when they come out.

Now that I have just written the above I feel a bit pathetic so I should go for that run! I’m going to put my running shoes on now and hit the pavement.

Until next time, smile on,
