Challenge date:
21 - 23 August 2009 Mount Snowdon Scafell Pike Ben Nevis 36 hours! Wearing pink knickers!
Friday 21st August
Smiling on Snowdon
Well the day has finally arrived when the pink pants team will travel to Snowdon and it’s an early start from my home town in Sussex – but not as early as our start will be tomorrow! Wendy, who is an endometriosis specialist nurse in Guildford, and I travel up to London on a commuter train – I am eager to wear my pink pants and Endometriosis UK t-shirt and put them on a soon as we get on the train – much to the amusement of the other commuters!
Most of the team rendezvous at London Euston for our train up to Manchester – here Wendy and I meet up with Richard (one of our former trustees who climbed Mt Kilimanjaro for us 5 years ago), Alix (one of my colleagues who bravely joined me in this challenge), Louise and Paula, both of whom are endometriosis sufferers. The six of us sport our pink pants with pride on the train – this does great work for endometriosis awareness as so many people notice us in our neon pink garments! On arrival at Manchester, we quickly meet up with Sam and Steve (another colleague/ husband of a colleague) and encourage them to wear their knickers too – now the team is almost complete!
We head off in our minibus to Snowdon. It quickly becomes apparent that this is a small minibus – we are very cosy on it, but not very comfy! How on earth will we sleep on this tomorrow?! Everyone is in great spirits and is eagerly anticipating our arrival at Snowdon. It doesn’t disappoint. About 3 hours later, we arrive at beautiful Snowdon, stopping for a quick photo shoot before checking into our hotel. This is lovely! We have an evening together with a delicious dinner before we have a short briefing from our logistics manager, Sid. He is quite blunt and to the point – this is not an easy challenge and we will need to take our instructions from the team tomorrow – that’s our fantastic leaders Mal, Joe (the doc), Ian and John. Our last team member, Natasha, a gynaecologist and research fellow from Guildford, arrives in Bangor after a day of operating on endometriosis patients – now our team is complete.
We get to bed early for a 5am start. I am too excited, I can’t sleep!
